The Phi Beta Kappa Society seeks a dynamic, highly motivated, and people-oriented professional with experience in non-profit or membership-based organizations, including support of volunteer leaders. A commitment to the value of a liberal arts and sciences undergraduate education is essential.
This full-time position provides strategic oversight for the Phi Beta Kappa Society chapters located on 290+ college and university campuses that induct ~20,000 new members per year. As the primary point of contact for chapter volunteer leaders, the Associate Director is responsible for planning and executing strategies to assist chapter leaders; collaborating on messages that resonate with PBK invitees and inductees; and managing chapter-related administrative and technical responsibilities, including student registration.
The Associate Director also serves as staff support and liaison to Phi Beta Kappa’s Committee on Chapters, which oversees chapter health, and to the Committee on Qualifications, which oversees the new chapter application process. As an integral part of PBK’s program team, the Associate Director, Chapter Relations reports to the Associate Secretary (COO) and collaborates closely with the Associate Director, Member Engagement, Senior Communications Manager and the IT department.

The person filling this position will have opportunities to further these goals, especially through encouraging chapter relationships with relevant campus communities, creating materials and messaging aimed at student invitees, overseeing the Student Induction Fund, and contributing to programming around the Society’s 250th anniversary celebration spanning eighteen months in 2026-2027.
Six years of experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in volunteer engagement and membership management in a higher education, non-profit, or alumni relations setting
Demonstrated understanding of liberal arts and sciences objectives
Robust proficiency in membership database platforms (IMIS or other CRM/CMS/AMS)
Experience with large-scale email platform (Informz), survey design and interpretation, MS Office Suite, Canva, InDesign, Zendesk etc.
Demonstrated success with volunteer coordination and mobilization
Capacity to coach and mentor volunteers to achieve desired results
Excellent skills in time management, organization, and written and oral communication
Creative approach to problem solving and program implementation
Ability to work as part of team, in collaboration with volunteers, and independently
BA/BS degree, with Phi Beta Kappa membership preferred, but not required
