The Poultry Science Association (PSA) is currently searching for an Executive Director, who will be assuming the duties of the role on or about January 2023.
PSA is a non-profit, professional organization of scientists engaged in academic, corporate, and technical support of the poultry industries with a vision to be the world’s most respected source for the poultry sciences. This position is a full-time staff position situated at the PSA Headquarters in Champaign, Illinois.
Among other responsibilities, the Executive Director is responsible for advising the Board of Directors and ensuring effective implementation of Board-approved plans and initiatives. The Executive Director is ultimately accountable for ensuring the long-term financial and operational sustainability of the Association in pursuit of its objectives, encompassing the entirety of the organization, its membership and those who benefit from its efforts.
This position reports to the PSA Board of Directors, all of whom serve on a volunteer basis. The Executive Director shall work principally with the PSA Board of Directors, PSA staff and volunteers of the Association to achieve the objectives and responsibilities outlined by the Board. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities The Executive Director of PSA shall be responsible for the following:
Leadership – As the long-term “face of PSA”, provides dynamic and innovative leadership of the Association and the PSA staff
Administration – Provides oversight and compliance in all administrative matters of PSA, including business, legal, financial, and human resources
Financial – Ensures the financial sustainability of the Association and fulfillment of Board-approved initiatives, while also ensuring PSA is in full compliance with all applicable laws and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Strategic Initiatives – Works in coordination with the PSA Strategic Planning Committee, other standing PSA committees, and the Board of Directors to develop and effectively implement PSA’s Strategic Plan
Scientific Conferences/Meetings – Ensures continuation of the #1 international poultry science meeting, providing oversight of the scientific program, fundraising, administrative duties, and financial sustainability
Publications – Provides oversight through the publisher of the production, publication, and marketing of the PSA Journals, Poultry Science®and TheJournal of Applied Poultry Research, while also ensuring plans are developed through the Journal Planning Committee and implemented to sustain the long-term financial viability of the journals
Science and Industry Liaison – Develops and maintains good working relationships with industry and academic segments of the Association, as well as seeking collaborative opportunities with industry associations and academic societies whose missions align with PSA
Fundraising – Works with the Board of Directors and members of the PSA Foundation committee on initiatives to benefit members and students, and leads the fundraising efforts of the group
Communications – Develops and oversees implementation of an effective communications plan, including social media, that will enhance the organization’s scientific credibility, worldwide, in support of the vision to be the world’s most respected resource for the poultry sciences
Employees and Staff – Manages the PSA Director of Operations and other PSA employees or contracted staff, as deemed appropriate by the Board of Directors, while providing a working environment that is productive and rewarding for employees and staff and compliant with all governing laws and regulations
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required (although a master’s degree or higher is preferred). The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated leader who has a proven track record in general management of businesses and/or cross-functional departments. Leadership experience in a non-profit, volunteer sector will be beneficial in this role. The candidate should have a strong appreciation for animal research and production agriculture.

Strong communication and marketing skills
Experience in fundraising
Experience managing volunteers with diverse backgrounds and interests
Proven track record as a successful leader
Significant experience in academic, government, industry, or non-government organizations
