The ASCB Publisher is responsible for the strategic development of the Society’s two publications (Molecular Biology of the Cell and CBE – Life Sciences Education) and for their ongoing financial well-being. This position works with the Editors-in-Chief in developing and implementing strategies to enhance ASCB publication quality and to ensure their continued growth. The Publisher oversees operations for the ASCB journals and introduces new publishing initiatives.The Publisher reports to the CEO and manages a direct report.
Report to the CEO and Council about the status of the Society’s publications and possible changes in industry technology, business models, and policies.
Develop new business opportunities regarding the Society’s publications.
Work closely with Editors-in-Chief to develop and execute journal strategies for growth.
Ensure Editorial Boards that reflect the diversity of the community.
Engage with the community and develop progressive editorial policies.
Bring innovative, data-driven approaches to editorial content development and reader engagement.
Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to drive visibility of the program.
Oversee all peer review and publishing operations, ensuring ASCB publications are produced on time and on budget.
Support Editors in handling ethical concerns and ensuring rigor of published content.
Responsible for RFPs, negotiating contracts, and managing budgets to maximize net revenue.
Apply publishing industry best practices and identify opportunities for innovation or technology improvements to improve the program.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position is directly responsible for managing the Journals Manager.

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required; Ph.D. in relevant scientific discipline preferred.
At least 6-8 years of experience in scholarly publishing.
Strong knowledge of STM publishing trends and best practices.
Experience working with volunteer leadership; society experience preferred.
Working knowledge of XML and HTML.
Experience with peer review and production systems, data, and processes.
