Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and serving as an integral member of the leadership team, NHPCO is seeking a Vice President of Finance to join our mission-driven team. In this role, you will direct and oversee the financial activities of NHPCO and its affiliates ensuring accurate and thorough preparation of financial reporting while creating forecasts and budgets to predict and shape future growth. You will champion a culture of fiscal responsibility, prudence and accountability while providing the financial tools and reporting that shapes great decisions and organizational growth. The ideal candidate will be a strategic, results-driven finance and accounting leader who embodies NHPCO’s culture through their leadership and the execution of outcomes.
This role is based in the Washington, DC area and is eligible to work a hybrid telework arrangement. Supervises three or more direct reports and may occasionally supervise interns or temporary employees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Partners and collaborates with the CFO, CEO, and leadership team on operational and strategic issues; provides strategic recommendations based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.
As staff liaison to the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee, engages with committee members around issues, trends, and changes in the operating model and operational delivery; develops agenda and schedule for committee meetings.
Oversees long-term budgetary planning and cost management to align with the strategic plan.
Prepares and presents financial reports including monthly profit and loss by division, forecast vs. budget by division and weekly cash for NHPCO and affiliates. Reviews all formal financial-related procedures and processes, recommends improvements, and manages the systems going forward.
Ensures timely reconciliation of general ledger accounts to sub-ledgers and schedules to include cash accounts (bank reconciliations), investment accounts, grants payable/receivable, accounts payable/receivable, intercompany balances, fixed assets, etc.
Conducts reviews of annual vendor information; reviews 1099 reports to ensure accurate and timely annual 1099 issuance.
Coordinates with Education team to supply financial metrics for the Annual Financial Reporting for CE/CME Accreditation, webinars, and annual conferences.
Manages the organization’s audit process and serves as primary contact to external auditor.
Optimizes the handling of bank and deposit relationships and initiates appropriate strategies to enhance cash position.
Oversees financial administration of grants; prepares and submits grant reports, assisting program staff through submission process and management of grants; reviews educational grant support requirements for educational programs.
Oversees inventory and fulfillment functions tied to the NHPCO Marketplace and all aspects of the on-site Marketplace at conferences; develops and reviews Marketplace budget; directs contractual relationships with vendors; partners with Marketing team to develop a marketing plan.
In conjunction with the NHPCO State Associations Manager and State Executive Directors, leads, oversees, and directs state hospice association management services and day-to-day operations.
Qualifications
Business or accounting degree required; Certified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly preferred.
A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in an accounting/finance role ideally with in-house financial management experience at a non-profit, trade, or educational association.
Exceptional leader and people manager with the ability to influence, engage, motivate, and guide their staff and others.
Familiar with nonprofit finance and accounting regulations.
Financial experience with hospice provider(s) is a plus.
A passion for NHPCO’s mission, vision, and values.
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), practices, standards, and requirements, as well as reviewing and validating financial data; Knowledge of banking and accounts management.

Proficiency in the use of database membership systems as related to accounting, netFORUM experience preferred; familiar with and able to coordinate financial data among various databases/integrations.
This position is classified as a full-time, exempt salaried position with a starting base salary at $168,116 - $252,175 annually (commensurate with related experience) plus an opportunity to earn annual merit increases and potential, but not guaranteed, performance bonuses.
