ALA is seeking an Editor/Publisher for Booklist Publications, a unit of ALA Publishing.
Reporting to the Associate Executive Director, ALA Publishing, the Editor/Publisher of this prestigious imprint will direct the editorial and content development, and the advertising, marketing, and production functions of Booklist’s print and digital products to maximize net revenue for the Association and maintain its competitive edge in the library market. Products include the flagship print magazine Booklist, the quarterly supplement Book Links, Booklist Online, and a range of enewsletters and other digital products. This position manages 6 direct reports, with an overall staff of 20.
Key responsibilities include the following:
Meet annual sales and expense targets in advertising, subscriptions, content licensing, and other sources of revenue to maximize net revenue for the Association.
Manage 6 direct reports in editorial, marketing, production, and general administration, and 3 independent advertising sales representatives.
Direct the development, implementation, and measurement of the unit’s strategic plans, capitalizing on trends and developments. Direct appropriate ongoing market research. Stay abreast of the library market and the needs of librarians in all types of libraries, including for professional development. Stay on top of trends in readers’ advisory and collection development.
Oversee conception and development of new products to meet expressed needs of advertisers and subscribers.
Ensure quality of content while developing and promoting the relationship between editorial content and advertising success.
Create, manage, and report on the unit’s annual budget (approximately $4 million).
Negotiate cost-effective contracts with outside vendors, especially for printing, web development, and magazine fulfillment.
Represent Booklist Publications throughout the Association and externally, including at ALA Midwinter and Annual Conferences, and other related conferences and events.
Build on 114-year history of excellence, with a focus on current and future needs. Approximately 10% travel
The Editor/Publisher position is based in Chicago, Illinois. The selected candidate will need to live in the area. A relocation package will be provided.
Salary: Negotiable from $115,000 based on relevant experience and qualifications. ALA offers a comprehensive and valuable benefits program, plus generous paid vacation and a retirement annuity.
