The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is searching for a Science Writing Intern in their Media & Communications department. The Intern will work closely with the Communications Specialist, Journals to maintain daily operation of SfN's scientific journals press and communications program. Regular tasks will focus on preparation and distribution of Weekly Journal Highlights to media. In addition, the Intern will assist the Specialist with longer-term projects such as preparing monthly media coverage reports. The Intern may have the opportunity to write and edit summaries of journal articles for pitching to media, publication in SfN communications venues, and social media platforms. In addition, the Intern will gain experience working independently and as part of a team, prioritizing and meeting deadlines, and reading and writing about cutting-edge neuroscience research.
Project(s)/Scope of Work:
Respond promptly and professionally to daily inquiries from science journalists, public information officers, and authors.
Format Weekly Journal Highlights for distribution to email media list, EurekAlert! science news service, and the news section of SfN.org.
Schedule journal content for dissemination on SfN's social media platforms.
Identify compelling visuals from journal articles to feature on the SfN.org homepage.
Monitor media coverage and prepare monthly reports.
If experience and time allow, draft press-friendly summaries of forthcoming research under deadline.
Skills/Knowledge Intern Will Gain:
Understanding of scientific publishing industry and processes.
Experience using digital communications tools, such as HubSpot, SiteCore, Sprout Social, Tweetdeck, TrendKite, and Altmetric Explorer.
Experience working with highly technical content.
Exposure to various career paths in science writing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience:
Completed at least two (2) years of college and coursework in the life sciences
Good with PC computers and Microsoft Office suite.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated interest in the mind, brain, and behavior
Strong written and oral communication skills
Willingness to learn and take on new tasks in a fast-paced work environment
