The Director, Membership is responsible for development, promotion and direction of all programs and services that foster and enhance membership within the Society. The Director, Membership will manage the day to day operations of SME’s Membership group including budgeting, financials, marketing, services and staff. The Director, Membership also develops strategy, provides direction, planning, implementation and measurement of membership programs. Create and maintain an awareness of membership activities among the SME staff.
Develop strategies to recruit new members and retain current members. Manage, track and evaluate all membership and renewal activities, including new member and renewal mailings, special appeals and affinity programs.
Partner with volunteer leadership to review the strategic direction and support activities.
Management and development of a medium-sized team 6 -10 direct reports, including talent recruitment, development, and retention
Review membership structure, value proposition and pricing to maximize member benefits and revenue to SME. Develop, implement and support the “SME member lifecycle” for members from first contact throughout their career.
Develop and meet or exceed annual membership budget targets and weekly and quarterly forecasts.
Identify, analyze and report on metrics to monitor membership growth, trends and financial results to support decision-making and strategic planning. Develop models of demographics, growth rates and financial performance.
Work with marketing to design and implement effective recruitment and retention strategies, develop direct communications with members and leaders and manage print and online content. This includes prospect list development to achieve growth in new markets.
Manage affinity programs with third party vendors to maximize member benefits and revenue to SME.
Develop and implement a Member Satisfaction program and monitor progress. Engage staff and volunteers to support the program and drive increased member satisfaction.
Conduct regular market research as needed to identify new markets, market size, market trends, etc.
Develop, promote and direct programs and services, which enhance and enable growth and engagement in students & young professionals.
Plan and manage member unit resources and apply it in ways which foster volunteer leadership, self-governance and member satisfaction.
Work closely with other business unit leaders, create programs and initiatives that leverage assets and facilitate communication between all aspects of membership and the SME organization.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing or related discipline
Minimum of seven years of association membership and/or marketing communications experience
Minimum of five years of staff management experience; Proven track record of leading a service oriented team working with members, volunteer leaders, committees and/or clients
Strategic and creative thinking skills combined with project management ability and demonstrated leadership.
Marketing knowledge and experience including social media, web, and business to business marketing.
Exceptional communication skills with the ability to deliver clear and effective messages to various audiences
Ability to collaborate while also demonstrating strong leadership and initiative
Facilitation skills including running effective meetings, negotiating and tactics, decision making, facilitating group dynamics, and conflict resolution
Industry Knowledge and contacts in manufacturing or other technical/technology area.
Based at SME Headquarters
Some travel required (varies from 20%-30%)
