Job Description

The National Headquarters of the American Lung Association is seeking a Director, Volunteerism to be responsible for leading the nationwide ALA volunteerism program and for directing the volunteerism program throughout the LungUSA territory (District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia).
 
Responsibilities include:
Nationwide Volunteerism Program:  In collaboration with the Assistant Vice President, Field Support Division, leads the nationwide ALA volunteerism program through implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the ALA nationwide volunteerism plan; monitors volunteerism trends and recommends revisions to the plan and participates in the ALA Volunteer Development Committee meetings.  Serves as primary volunteerism staff resource to chartered association volunteer engagement leads: ensures that volunteerism plans are in place at each association and that aligns with the nationwide plan and that incorporate volunteerism best practices; provides consultation and technical assistance as requested or needed.  Leads the nationwide ALA volunteer recruitment program: creates the volunteerism content on the www.lung.org website and ensures that potential volunteers are connected with the appropriate chartered association; conducts quarterly follow-up with the associations and volunteers, produces annual evaluation and distributes it to appropriate staff and volunteers.  Maintains an ongoing dialogue and creates partnerships with corporations and organizations with employees or members located throughout the U.S. in order to recruit them as ALA volunteers.  Directs the nationwide ALA volunteer recognition program: serves as lead staff support to the awards selection subcommittees; promotes and markets the program and nomination timeline to volunteers and staff.  Recommends new volunteerism tools and resources to chartered associations; leads task forces in the development of  ALA-specific tools and resources for nationwide use.  Directs the national headquarters volunteerism program: identifies volunteer opportunities and develops volunteer position descriptions; recruits volunteers to meet these needs; provides oversight to staff working with volunteers; trains headquarters staff that are volunteer managers in best practices for volunteer orientation, training, engagement, management, evaluation and recognition. 


LungUSA Volunteerism Program:  In collaboration with LungUSA Program and Volunteer Manager, develops and implements a volunteerism plan for the LungUSA territory to ensure a strong corps of volunteers engaged in mission and fundraising activities.  Develops strong Leadership Councils throughout the territory: in collaboration with other LungUSA staff, identifies and recruits new members to the Leadership Councils in the three states and the District of Columbia; leads orientation, ongoing development opportunities and recognition activities for members; coordinates meeting logistics and provides lead staff support for all Leadership Councils.  Develops and manages performance based management system targets and milestones related to volunteerism.  Directs the Everyone Ready volunteer management program for the territory as described by the Field Support Division.  Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President, Field Support Division, and Executive Director, LungUSA.


Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree, certification in volunteer administration (CVA) preferred.  Five to seven years’ experience in volunteer management required.  Demonstrated experience desired in training of staff and volunteers, facilitation of groups, development of volunteer partnerships and providing staff support to committees.  Excellent project management and interpersonal skills needed.  Ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision.  Willingness to pursue ongoing learning opportunities for professional growth and development.  Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Access, Excel and Powerpoint).  Ability and willingness to travel.
